Dr Miaoqiang Lyu

Miaoqiang Lyu received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Queensland in 2017, under the supervision of Professor Lianzhou Wang and Dr Jung Ho Yun, before continuing as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UQ. He has since held four consecutive independent research fellowships at UQ: the Advance Queensland Early-Career Industry Research Fellowship (2019–2022), the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (2022–2025), the Advance Queensland Mid-Career Industry Research Fellowship (2025–2027), and the ARC Future Fellowship (2026–2030). He is currently an ARC Future Fellow and Group Leader in the School of Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland.
Research topics
Dr Lyu’s research is focused on the design and development of advanced optoelectronic materials with a particular focus on lead-free halide perovskite semiconductors and their derivatives, as well as their translation into functional devices. His group’s fundamental research program explores the synthesis, stability, and optoelectronic properties of low-toxicity metal halide perovskites, with device applications spanning indoor photovoltaics, solar cells, phototransistors, detectors and self-powered health-monitoring devices. In parallel, his applied program develops scalable printed energy storage technologies, including printable thin-film zinc batteries, for integration with autonomous wearable and Internet-of-Things electronics.
A defining feature of Dr Lyu’s research is its dual focus on fundamental materials discovery and real-world translation. His group achieved the world-record indoor photovoltaic efficiency for lead-free halide perovskites, and developed a printable polymer electrolyte for flexible thin-film zinc batteries. His work sits at the intersection of materials chemistry, device engineering, and sustainable technology, with the aim of advancing low-toxicity alternatives to conventional semiconductor and energy materials toward practical deployment.
